One of the major family sitcoms of the late 1980s/early 1990s, ROSEANNE became popular for its no-nonsense attitude and its humorously honest portrayal of American life. With a set resembling the living room of countless family homes across the United States, the show concerned itself the with the antics of its main star, Roseanne Barr (later Roseanne Arnold), her husband Dan (John Goodman), and their kids. More like a regular working-class family than any other characters previously seen on television, the Illinois-bred Conners use brutal honesty and acerbic wit to raise their three children: rapidly maturing Becky, sarcastic Darlene, and precocious DJ. Meanwhile, they have to deal with the typical problems of an American family, such as annoying relatives, worries about jobs and money, and the struggle to find time for themselves. ROSEANNE was among the first shows on television to deal in a truthful and deglamorized way with everyday issues that average viewers could relate to--and it managed to remain funny and touching while doing so. In the small coastal town of Capeside, Massachusetts, a group of high school kids come of age, each with his or her own set of trials and tribulations. The characters who have grown up in the past five seasons of this wildly popular prime-time soap opera continue their experiences of love, loss, and friendship. Kirstie Alley`s loving send-up of the absurdities of Hollywood stars the former CHEERS actress as a character similar to her real-life persona. A successful actress trying to deal with the vagaries of the industry, Kirstie searches for love and success in the often cruel and superficial milieu of the film industry. A hybrid of sitcom and reality TV, most of the series is unscripted, taking plotlines from Kirstie`s life and improvising the rest. Much of the show concerns itself with the negative image that has been built up around Kirstie`s weight gain, and the difficulties of finding work and acceptance in the industry when one is not a svelte size three. To stay sane, she is armed with her buoyant personality and quick wit, as well as a couple of allies: Eddie (Bryan Callen), Kirstie`s assistant with Hollywood dreams of his own, and Kevyn (Rachael Harris), Kirstie`s stylist who works hard to guide Kirstie in her quest to look good. Guest stars are also in plentiful supply, with a lineup that includes Kid Rock, Carmen Electra, Merv Griffin, Kevin Nealon, Mark Curry, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and many more.
