Both a radio and a television program, THE ORIGINAL AMATEUR HOUR was a variety show that offered amateur singers and performers their first big break in show business. Among the weird and wonderful acts that appeared some genuine talent emerged, and this program highlights both the hopeless novelty acts and the major stars who went on to find fame and fortune. Pat Boone--himself a product of the show--hosts this series of clips, which features nascent performances from future stars such as Gladys Knight, Frank Sinatra, and Raul Julia.

The HBO television series SIX FEET UNDER, about the members of a dynamic Los Angeles-based family that operates the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home, has an ironically grim, but intriguing premise: each episode is based on the death and extenuating circumstances of the family's current client. When a porno star dies and is brought to Fischer and Sons, an entourage of her former costars appear to mourn her death. In another episode, the family must negotiate with tough Mexican-American gang members who have very specific requests for the funeral of one of their brethren. A sassy drama that is rife with black comedy, SIX FEET UNDER follows other HBO hit series like SEX IN THE CITY, THE SOPRANOS, and OZ. Alan Ball created the hit series after scoring a huge success with his original screenplay for AMERICAN BEAUTY. Albert was ushered into the narrative as a replacement for the Trotter`s grandfather, who shuffled off-screen in 1984 when the actor who played him, Lennard Pearce, sadly passed away. Fans of the show will be delighted to discover that the Trotter brothers are still embroiled in all manner of get-rich-quick schemes in the sixth series. There`s also some romantic interest for Rodney, and further displays of sartorial tastelessness from Del. A delightful British comedy that becomes addictive once hooked, ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES helps carry on a long-standing trend of superior comedy offerings from the UK.
